Environment Design Approach
■ Start with the assets and material shared across the most story points
■ Understand the story beats and what's tonally needed as well as the "depth" of the scene
(what has full volume)
■ Creates kits that are reusable to accomplish refined art direction
■ Animated textures
■ Assets
■ Sprites where possible (trees, clouds, mist, waves, sails, boats)
■ Make not just assets but compositions that work and can be used throughout
■ Stay context and outcome oriented. Thoughtfully consider what shows up on screen when
making simple models, displacements, and using full res assets vs. sprites
■ Build from back to front

The Ocean - Design Kickoff
Should look like the ideal vacation spot with rich water and shallows. Only needed for distant horizon. (this ended NOT being the case). Different water types - shallow (can see the sand underneath) and deep (dense blue)
Stylized Sky Landscape
(shared across all sequences taking place at this time of day. ~ 300 shots)
Design Kickoff
It's a hot, humid day. Big cumulus clouds, light cirrus + stratus in a mostly blue sky. Horizon is diffuse and indicates moisture in the air.
- Make sure it makes your neighbors happy (comprehensive multi-layered HDR deliverable texture files mapped onto simple geometry)
- Diagnostic set breakdown that showed that we needed to make ocean waves, not just distant ocean
